If you were to ask any fashion enthusiast if they thought Cardi B would ever get the chance to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, the answer would likely be no. Consider the highly publicized debacle she had with fellow Hip Hop hard-hitter Nicki Minaj during the magazine’s infamous Bazaar Icons party during Fall/Winter 2018, and you’d likely agree with that prediction. But alas less than 6 months later, Cardi B has been announced as the cover girl of Harper Bazaar US Spring Fashion Issue. And it’s the perfect next chapter to the epic Binderella story that we call Cardi B’s rise to success.
Cardi B gracing the cover of Harper’s Bazaar is a HUGE deal — but not for the reason that you may think. The five-time Grammy award nominated actress is making a statement on forging more diversity in the fashion industry at large by bringing her team along with her as she climbs to the top. She elected her long-time stylist Kollin Carter, who has elevated her style aesthetic to nothing short of icon status, to style her editorial looks for the shoot. And with the green light from higher-ups at Harper’s Bazaar, Kollin Carter was granted the title of ’Fashion Editor’ for this esteemed issue of their publication. It should come as no surprise that this is an opportunity rarely granted to people of color in the mainstream fashion industry, with many of the world’s largest magazine only having their first black editors within the past few years. To celebrate this major feat in his still-budding career, Kollin Carter took to Instagram to candidly share his feelings;

Growing up @harpersbazaarus was one of my favorite magazines. Anyone who knows me knows that! It was always just a dream to style a cover and spread! GOD! Wow! My first cover of Harper’s Bazaar styled by ME! Thank you Glenda editor&chief for allowing me to do so! Thank @ashelina44 for putting this together! Another ✅ off the bucket list! (And to think, they said we’d never get invited to another Harper’s event, here we are on the cover 🤗) Photographer @marianovivanco Hair @tokyostylez Makeup @erika_lapearl_mua
Last October, the rapper and stylist duo also collaborated on Cardi B’s W Magazine cover and editorial spread. This was also a huge first for Kollin Carter, who creatively directed the entire shoot:
Oftentimes, magazines assume all creative control over their magazine covers and utilize their own teams — including stylists — so it’s incredible that Cardi B continues to persist in making a seat at the table for the creatives who have helped shape her image and career up to this point. Not only is she helping to bring more representation to the industry by breaking long-existing glass ceilings for people of color, but she’s helping these magazines see what can happen when some new, fresh talent is given the opportunity to shine. We commend Cardi B and Kollin Carter for the amazing impact they’re making on the fashion industry, and can’t wait to see much more inclusion like this on magazine covers!
