It was announced early this morning (August 16, 2018) that the incomparable Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, has passed away after a rough and long battle with cancer. The legendary singer, best known for her hit singles including “Respect” and “Natural Woman”, solidified her status as a leading voice in soul music through her decades-long career which began in 1964 with her first chart-topping single¬†¬†“Runnin’ Out of Fools.”

Coming up amidst the Civil Rights movement and stiff racial tension in the United States, Aretha forged her way to stardom through her undeniable talent and vibrant spirit — paving the way for the diverse musical landscape we enjoy today.
